Tourism in Johnson County Makes Major Strides in Second Year

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Festival Country Indiana, Johnson County’s official tourism agency, marketed the county’s hotels and attractions to millions of people and saw key metrics increase during 2018.

“Even though we’re a new tourism agency and 2018 was the first full year we did full-scale advertising of our destination as Festival Country Indiana, we saw the brand resonate with people looking for a festive time, whether it be festivals, concerts, or fun attractions. Many of our top attractions reported having record years,” said Kenneth Kosky, director of tourism in Johnson County.



A group of volunteers established a county tourism website in 2009, but it wasn’t until 2016 that the county created a tourism agency to begin full operations in mid-2017.

Among the highlights of 2018 are:

• An economic impact study showed completed in 2018 showed visitors spent $183.2 million a year and that the overall economic impact of tourism is $255.7 million a year.

• Festival Country Indiana was featured by The Jet Set TV and other travel journalists, reaching 6.7 million people.

• The Festival Country Indiana poster series kicked off with the creation of a poster featuring The Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin.

• The number of unique visitors to festivalcountryindiana.com increased from 2,100 a month in 2017 to 11,300 a month in 2018.

• Facebook page likes grew from 8,545 in 2017 to 25,054 in 2018, while Instragram followers increased from 424 to 739, and Twitter followers increased from 348 to 445.

• The Festival Country Indiana brand and its attractions were advertised to more than 15 million people.

• The organization started an internship program contributing 320 service hours.

• Festival Country Indiana awarded $27,000 in grant money to Greenwood, Franklin, Bargersville, Edinburgh and other communities.

Festival Country Indiana also created a video series and a printed guide in 2018.
