The seminar is 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 22 at the Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital (IOH), 8400 Northwest Boulevard, Indianapolis. RSVP to the Better Way Back at (800) 745-7099 (toll-free) or via email at info@thebetterwayback.org. Dr. Schwartz will speak about innovative spine surgery procedures including the eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF®) technique. Nate will share his story about his journey pursuing a career as a MMA fighter while overcoming back pain. In 2001, Nate made his professional mixed martial arts debut and won his first match with a TKO in the second round. Subsequent victories earned Nate an invitation to appear on The Ultimate Fighter reality television show and his career was launched. Unfortunately, injuries are common for competitors in the world of mixed martial arts, and they began to take their toll on Nate. His increasing back pain began to limit his ability to work out and began to affect his career. At age 34, he was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, could no longer lift his young daughter, and was told he should not fight any more. Faced with the end of his MMA career, Nate underwent minimally disruptive spinal surgery in 2006. Remarkably, he resumed his career by returning to MMA fighting a mere 15 months later. Currently, Nate is a paid spokesperson for NuVasive®, the company that developed XLIF, the back surgery procedure he underwent. He also serves as the Ultimate Ambassador and Health and Wellness Coach for The Better Way Back®, a patient education and support program for those who suffer from chronic back or leg pain and may be facing back surgery.
